Newark High School has received a 2020 and 2021 Best High School national ranking in the top 40% of high schools in the US.

Newark High School is a 2020 Best High School, based on rankings that U.S. News and World Report published on April 21, 2020! By earning a national ranking in the top 40%, Newark High School achieved status as a U.S. News Best High School. Nearly 18,000 schools were ranked on six factors based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.

Newark High School is now the 8th highest ranked traditional high school in Delaware and 13th highest overall out of 40.

History of the Alma Mater

The Alma Mater is credited to Frederick Kutz, then a teacher and later principal, in 1941. A small committee including Anne Richards and Wanda Gilmore worked with Kutz to write the words set to the then popular song "Juanita". The song is sung in four-part harmony, usually with only the first verse and the chorus. Traditionally each class before 1941 had a song with customized words that was sung at graduation.

Yellowjackets Excellence

Newark High School has earned prestigious awards, including a GRAMMY and multiple Technology Student Association Awards . These honors highlight the school's commitment to comprehensive student support, fostering positive behavior, and creating a safe, nurturing environment.

Our Newark High School Campus serves a diverse student and staff population and is proud to be part of the culturally-rich Newark community. Approximately 43% of our students are African-American, 24% white, 24% Hispanic or Latino, 5% Multi-Racial, 2% Asian-American, <1%Native American and <1% Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander.
